In today’s post, I want to share the Harlequin Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket. I fell in love with the look of it when I was searching for the perfect stitch to use. At first, I was intimidated by it. But once I got the hang of the Harlequin Stitch, it was actually pretty easy.
Design
The Harlequin Stitch is a 4 row repeat using a combination of chains, single crochet, and double crochet stitch variations. The stitch makes it easy to change up colors. Or you could choose to use one color for the entire blanket.
With this baby blanket being for a baby girl, I really wanted to used feminine colors. So I chose pink and purple. But you could choose any color combination and it would look amazing!
To finish off the blanket, I added a cute little ruffle all around the edges.
Materials
For the hook size, I used a US H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook which is what the yarn suggested. I think it helped the Harlequin Stitch to come out perfectly.
For the yarn, I used Caron Simply Soft which I’ve used for some of my other baby blankets. I really love using this yarn. It is so soft and is pretty easy to work with. Plus there are quite a few colors to choose from!

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
Notes:
- Pattern is written using American terms.
- For the foundation chain, make a chain length in a multiple of 8 + 1.
- Stitch pattern is reversible; there is no right or wrong side.
- Harlequin stitch is a 4 row repeat
- Change yarn colors at the ends of row 3 and 5.
- Weave in ends and block the blanket (if necessary) before completing the border.
- There are 3 rounds of border with the last round being the ruffle stitch.
Special Stitches:
Dc3tog:
Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, *yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw through 2 loops * repeat between * 1 more time, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
Dc6tog:
Yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, *yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw through 2 loops * repeat between * 4 more times, yarn over and draw through all 7 loops on hook.
FOUNDATION ROW: With color A, ch 121.
ROW 1: In 5th ch from hook, work [3dc, ch 1, 3dc], sk 3ch, 1sc in next ch, *sk 3 ch, [3dc, ch 1, 3dc] in next ch, sk 3 ch, 1sc in next ch, rep from * to end, turn. (120 sts)
ROW 2: Ch3, sk first sc, dc3tog over next 3dc, *ch 7, sk 1 ch, dc6tog over next 6 dc (skipping sc in center); rep from * ending with dc3tog in the last 3dc, 1dc in the top of the last ch, turn. (120 sts)
ROW 3: Ch3, sk first dc, 3dc in top of dc3tog (hole that formed between the dc3tog and dc from row below), *1sc in ch 1 sp two rows below enclosing the ch 7, [3dc, ch 1, 3dc] in the top of the dc6tog (center sp), rep from * ending with 3dc in top of the dc3tog, 1dc in top of the turning ch, changing to color B in last st, turn. (120 sts)
ROW 4: Ch 4, sk first dc, *dc6tog over next 6 dc (skipping sc in center), ch 7, sk 1 ch, rep from * ending with ch 3, 1sc in top of turning ch, turn. (120 sts)
ROW 5: Ch 1, sk first sc and the ch 3, *[3dc, ch 1, 3dc] in top of the 6dctog (center sp), sc in ch 1 sp two rows below enclosing the ch 7, rep from * ending with 1sc in the first st of ch 4, changing to color C in last st, turn. (120 sts)
ROW 6-73: Rep row 2 through 5 ending work on row 5.
ROW 74: Ch3 and turn (ch3 counts as 1 dc), *in top of the next 2dc, hdc. In the top of the last dc, dc. Sk over the ch sp. Dc in next dc. In the next 2dc, hdc. Sc in the sc. Rep from * to the end of the row ending the last sc in the turning ch. Finish off. (120 sts)
Weave in ends.
Block blanket
BORDER
ROUND 1: Join with color B in any st. Ch1, sc in each st around blanket doing 3sc in each corner. Sl st into 1st sc to complete rnd and change to color C.
ROUND 2: Ch1, sc in each st around blanket doing 3sc in each corner. Sl st into 1st sc to complete rnd and change to color A.
Round 3: Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2dc in the same st, work 3dc in each st around blanket. In each corner st, complete 6dc. Sl st into the 1st ch3 of the rnd. Fasten off.
