Easy Crochet Baby Blanket

This easy crochet baby blanket was a fun design to create. A friend of mine asked me to make one for her. She wanted it for her friend’s baby shower and it needed to be a gender neutral baby blanket. To be honest, I restarted this blanket 4 different times to get the right type of stitches for this blanket. I wanted to crochet something that wasn’t too holey for little babies fingers and toes to get caught in. And I wanted something to show each color perfectly.

Design

For the easy crochet baby blanket design, I first started by reviewing 3 different crochet stitch books. But nothing made me excited. So I decided to jump on Pinterest looking at different crochet stitches. Again no stitches jumped out or got me excited. I really wanted to stick with simple stitches. And that’s what I came up with! The main blanket part is designed with single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet stitches. And it alternates colors for each row.

Then I started to realize how many ends I needed to weave in. So I ripped it out and restarted. This time I carried the non-working yarn for each row. Which helped to eliminate the need for weaving in a bazillion ends. Soon I realized the need to gently tug on each end of the blanket after a row was complete. It helped to smooth out the yarn and prevent it from bunching.

Next big decision point was color! Because I was making this for another person, I wanted to make sure I picked out the right colors along with the right type of yarn for the crochet baby blanket. My friend wanted white and green to keep it gender neutral. What I soon realized was how many different shades of green are available! On top of that I wanted to make sure the yarn was soft. When it comes to sweet little babies, they need the softest most cuddly yarn there is! The first type of yarn I ordered online was 100% cotton. And it was not the softness I was looking for. I learned a lesson there – sometimes as much as I want to order yarn online, it’s easier to go to the store to feel the texture and know for sure it’s the right yarn!

Pattern

The pattern for the easy crochet baby blanket consists of rows of single crochets mixed in with half double crochet and double crochet rows. For the border, I wanted to do something with a little more detail. And the ribbed border worked beautifully. I feel it really stands out in the blanket. The ribbed border was made using front post double crochet and back post double crochet.

Enough about the design and pattern, let’s get onto the pattern instructions.

Blanket Tutorial

***Below is the step-by-step tutorial; please keep scrolling DOWN for the free crochet pattern with everything written out***

First with color A, you’ll chain 136 stitches.

For the start of row 1, you’ll double crochet into the 3rd chain from the hook. And then you’ll double crochet in each stitch across In the last stitch, you’ll join color B. Total stitches = 134

For row 2, you’ll start off chaining 1. This chain does NOT count as the first stitch. You will want to single crochet in the 1st stitch from the hook and then single crochet across the row. At the end you’ll join color A. Total stitches = 134

Row 3 you’ll start with chaining 2; these chains do NOT count as the first stitch. You’ll half double crochet in the first stitch from the hook and in each stitch across the row. At the end of the row, you’ll join color B. Total stitches = 134

Row 4 is the same as row 2. You’ll chain 1 which doesn’t count as the first stitch. You’ll single crochet in the first stitch from the hook and in each stitch across. Total stitches = 134

You will round out with row 5 which is a row of double crochet. You’ll start the row with chaining 3 which will NOT count as the first stitch. You’ll double crochet in the first stitch from the hook and in each stitch across and change to color A in the last stitch. Total stitches = 134

You’ll continue this pattern of repeating rows 2-5 until your desired length. Finish off the blanket with a row of double crochet. Weave in ends and block blanket! You’re done!

Border Tutorial

The border is completed doing 5 rounds around the blanket. The first round is doing single crochet with color B; making sure to do 3 single crochets in each corner. The next round consists of all double crochets in color A.

Round 3 is where you start with the front post double crochet and back post double crochet. You’ll start with chaining 3. Then do a front post double crochet in the next stitch followed by a back post double crochet in the next stitch. You’ll continue to alternate between the two stitches around the blanket. For rounds 4 and 5, you’ll continue the same pattern. You’ll be doing a front post double crochet into the front post double crochet stitch from the previous round. And it’s the same thing for the back post double crochet.
