Summer Breeze Easy Lightweight Crochet Shawl

This was my first crochet shawl pattern I designed. At first I thought about a triangle shawl. But once I started surfing Pinterest to get inspired, I soon fell in love with the rectangular shaped shawls. I wanted to create an easy shawl design with the same pattern repeat and this design allowed me to do that.

What’s so awesome about this crochet shawl design is how easy it is to modify. You can change both the width and height by simply adding or deleting chains (for width) or rows (for height).

The Design

For this shawl I used Lion Brand Cotton Candy in Ice Blue. I wanted a a lighter weight yarn since this is for summer. I LOVE how it has different speckles of color throughout the yarn. And it’s super soft and light, and the yarn was super easy to work with. I also used a 4mm (size G/6) hook for the design. I tried a larger hook as well but wanted the stitches to be a little smaller especially with smaller weight yarn.

The pattern itself is super simple – it’s worked with a repeat of double crochets and chains throughout! The crochet shawl doesn’t require intense concentration so it’s a great project to do while you’re watching tv or traveling in the car.

Step by Step Tutorial for the Summer Breeze Easy Crochet Shawl

***Below is the step-by-step tutorial; please keep scrolling DOWN for the free crochet pattern with everything written out***

First you’ll chain 240 (needs to be a multiple of 4 stitches + 3 stitches + 5 stitches for foundation chains). The 3 stitches are for moving up to the beginning of row 1 and the 5 stitches are for the first 5 chains that start each row.

For the start of row 1, start with 1 double crochet in 8th chain from hook. 

Then you’ll chain 4, skip 3 chains in foundation row, and do 1 double crochet in next chain (or 4th chain). Repeat this step until the end of the row ending with a double crochet and turn.

For the start of row 3 chain 5. Then do 1 double crochet in 1st chain space (pictured below).

Continue across the row by chaining 4 and doing 1 double crochet in each chain space. Repeat this step until the end of the row and turn. 

For the rest of the shawl, repeat row 2 until desired height. Weave in any ends and block to keep shape.

Clover 1045/G Purple Amour Crochet Hook, Size G, 4.0mm

Lion Brand® “ Cotton Candy Blend®” 5 oz / 142g; 271 yds/ 248m

2 skeins 106 Ice Blue

MEASUREMENTS

Approx Width: 64 in (162.56 cm)

Approx Height: 18 in (45.72 cm)

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS

Notes: 

• Pattern is written using American terms.
• Stitch pattern is the Honeycomb. 
• Gauge is not important. 

FOUNDATION ROW: Ch 240 (multiple of 4 sts + 3 + 5 for foundation ch).

ROW 1:  1 dc in 8th ch from hook.  *4ch, sk 3 ch, 1 dc in next ch, rep from * to end, turn.

ROW 2: 5ch, 1 dc in first ch sp.  *4ch, 1 dc in next ch sp, rep from * to end, turn.  

Rows 3 – 31: Rep row 2 (until desired height).  

FINISHING 

Weave in any remaining ends.  Block shawl to keep shape.
