Houndstooth Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket pattern

Wrap your little one in warmth and style with this Houndstooth Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern. The distinctive houndstooth design brings a sophisticated yet cozy feel, making it a perfect addition to any nursery or a thoughtful handmade gift. This beginner-friendly pattern uses a simple stitch repeat to create a stunning blanket for cribs or strollers.

Design

The Houndstooth stitch creates a bold, classic design that is surprisingly easy to learn. This pattern is beginner-friendly with a repeating one row stitch sequence. The stitch uses basic techniques— single crochet and double crochet stitches to form the “houndstooth” design that really shows off the yarn colors. It’s versatile, works up quickly, and adds a pop of visual appeal to the crochet blanket.

The border consists of bobble stitches which gives the blanket a nice finish. The Bobble Stitch border consists of double crochet and slip stitches.

Materials

For the Houndstooth Stitch Baby Blanket, I used Caron Simply Soft in Taupe and Robins Egg, but for this blanket you can use any #4 worsted weight yarn. I wanted to use colors that contrasted well to make the stitch stand out. I used a size H (5mm) hook which worked well with the stitch and yarn combination.

PATTERN NOTES:

  • Pattern is written using American terms.
  • For the foundation chain, make an odd number of chains.
  • Pattern is a 1 row repeat and color changes every row.
  • Start and end blanket with color A (Taupe).  Border will be done using color B (Robins Egg)
  • For the blanket, there’s no right and wrong side of the blanket.  However, there is a side where the Robins Egg yarn shows through more and a side where the Taupe yarn shows through more.  This will be important when doing the border as you’ll want to make sure the Bobble shows on the side of your choosing.  Ex: For my blanket I wanted the Bobble to show on the Robins Egg side, so when I did the border, I had the Taupe side (wrong side) facing me.
  • For round 3 of the border, there’s no need to do extra sts in each corner, just continue the pattern in each st around the blanket.

SPECIAL STITCHES (US TERMS):

Slip Stitch (Sl st): Insert hook into stitch, YO and draw through both loops on hook.

Single Crochet (Sc): Insert hook into stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook.

Double Crochet (Dc): YO, insert hook into stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, YO and pull through 2 remaining loops on hook.
