I absolutely LOVE 💓 crocheting and being able to create something from a ball of yarn. In this past year, I’ve really spent a lot of free time crocheting and trying new things. It’s been so amazing and rewarding and I’m so thankful to be able to do this amazing hobby!!! 💓💓💓 Plus I’ve been able to connect with so many people who also love this hobby!! I’ve felt so many benefits of crochet this past year!

There are several mental health benefits, and I want to share those with you!

Depression: Helps to reduce the feelings of depression. The repetition of a craft like crochet helps to release the feel-good hormone serotonin; a natural anti-depressant. In one study, over half the participants felt “happier” after crocheting. This is one of the most reported and studied effects of crocheting.

Insomnia: Helps to quite the mind by focusing on crocheting. At bedtime, the concentration and rhythmic motion, it can help to calm the mind and wind down and makes it easier to fall asleep.

Memory Loss: Several studies have shown crocheting (and knitting) can reduce age-related memory loss. The crafts are soothing and help a person to focus. It helps a person to coordinate the brain and body which has a calming effect. Counting the stitches helps to fight against dementia.

Community Involvement: Gives people the opportunity to meet people through craft shows, online communities, and by sharing or teaching the craft to other family and friends. Plus getting together with like-minded people who share the same hobby is always a fun time. A person could also crochet and donate to a charity; there are several out there that will take donated items.

Crocheting also helps with mindfulness and being present in the moment. The number one benefit listed by crocheters is relaxation. Crochet also creates new pathways in the brain when learning new skills and movements. When those pathways get strengthened, it helps to quiet the mind and relax. Also it keeps the mind focused and the hand busy, so it has a calming affect and reduces anxious feelings.
